The Associação Atlântica de Apoio aos Doentes de Machado-Joseph was honored with the Municipal Medal of Merit, awarded by the Ponta Delgada City Council as part of the celebrations marking the 480th anniversary of Ponta Delgada’s designation as a city, on April 2, 2026.

This award recognizes more than three decades of dedication to providing social and psychological support to people affected by Machado-Joseph disease, as well as the work done to promote their inclusion and quality of life. Since its founding on August 5, 1996, the Association has maintained a continuous commitment to helping patients and their families, guided by dedication, solidarity, and a close relationship with them.

Over the years, it has also played a significant role in raising awareness of rare diseases, collaborating with medical and scientific organizations and contributing to the advancement of knowledge about this condition, which is particularly prevalent in the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

The awarding of this Municipal Medal of Merit is a source of deep gratitude and honor for the AAADMJ, underscoring the importance of the work it has carried out and renewing its commitment to continue serving the community with dedication and a sense of mission.

The Board of Directors of AAADMJ extends its sincere gratitude to the Ponta Delgada City Council for this honor, which recognizes not only the institution but also all those who, over the years, have contributed to the fulfillment of its mission.
